MAINTAINING NATURAL HAIR

Studies show that the average person's hair will grow about a half inch a month. In order to maintain healthy hair, you should have a routine regimen that allows your hair to flow at its most optimal state. Here are a few tips to keep in mind during the duration of your braid style:

  • PROTECT YOUR EDGES!!! When wearing individual braids it is important to NOT apply tension on the perimeter of your hair for the first week or two. During that time period, your hairstyle is fresh and secured to your scalp. Give the style time to loosen up before putting it into a ponytail or updo style.

  • Protecting your hair during your nightly routines is essential to keeping the edges looking fresh and well maintained. Whenever you decide to lay down, it is strongly advised to cover or tie down your hair with a satin scarf to prevent frizzy and dry hair.

  • Cleansing your scalp every two or three weeks is essential to promote health hair growth and prevent dry itchy scalp, build up and debris.

  • Applying oil to your scalp at least 3 times a week is key to aiding and preventing dry, itchy scalp.

  • It is highly advised to not leave your braids in too long. I personally suggest that clients should not leave individual braids or weave styles in longer than two months, to prevent breakage from the weight of the style after the hair has grown away from the scalp.

Wand Curls

Important tips for chemically processed hair. This includes color, relaxers, curly perms, blowouts and anything that changes the physical makeup of your natural color and/or texture:

  • DO NOT scratch your scalp 24 to 48 hours prior to salon visit. Avoiding this will prevent possible bruises, burns and abrasions that can cause scalp irritation during your chemical process.

  • Always be honest with your stylist about prior chemical services that you've received or done at home. There are many different considerations for chemically treated hair.

  • Keep the ends of your hair trimmed to prevent breakage and reduce split ends.

  • The use of blow dryers and hot irons should be kept to a minimum to preserve the longevity of your hair.

  • To maintain your beautiful vibrant color, always use shampoos and conditioners that are specifically for color treated hair to prevent your color from fading.

  • In addition to maintaining colored treated hair, always use hydrating hair cleansers, conditioners, masks and styling creams. The use of these items will promote strength and integrity in your hair, while sustaining its elasticity.

If you have  curyl, coily or wavy hair, here are some tips to keep your curl pattern defined.

  • MOISTURIZE MOISTURIZE MOISTURIZE!!! It is highly important for natural hair. Find a product that works well with your texture to help define your lovely, curly, locs. This includes shampoos, conditioners and styling products.

  • Well defined curls are healthy from root to end. Keeping your ends moisturized and trimmed (when necessary) will reduce frizz and allow your curls to have its bouncy shape.

  • When combing your hair or detangling, ALWAYS start combing from ends to root to prevent knotting and tangling.

  • NEVER PULL HAIR APART TO DETANGLE. It's important to part your hair into sections to allow proper manipulation. When you pull your hair from root to ends, you end up accumulating knots from scalp and collecting them down to the ends of your hair. This can lead to extreme breakage.

  • Apply a leave-in conditioner to each section to help you with your detangling process.

  • When styling hair into ponytails, NEVER pull the hair tight to the scalp. This will cause breakage and thinning.

  • ALWAYS wear a satin scarf, bonnet or use pillowcase to prevent breakage and tangling while sleeping. Try to avoid cotton materials when wrapping your hair, this may cause the hair to become dry and brittle over time.

A LITTLE INSPIRATION

Your inward feelings is a direct reflection of your outward appearance. Healthy thoughts equates to a positive outlook on life. You can achieve this by eliminating all negative thoughts and emotions in exchange for a healthy conscience. From this you will experience all the joy and peace that life offers. Beauty comes from within. Live it, Breath it, Be it!
